The EV of the Year by Car and Driver is an annual award that honors the best electric vehicle on the market, based on a rigorous and comprehensive evaluation process. It's designed to spotlight the EV that delivers the most complete, compelling, and enjoyable ownership experience. More here.
Car and Driver's 2025 EV of the Year award evaluated 24 electric vehicles from 15 manufacturers, testing each for handling, braking, acceleration, charging performance, and range. Each was rated in four categories: Fun to Drive, Mission Fulfillment, Value, and Technology Application.
After testing various models from the base rear-wheel-drive Porsche Taycan and Cross Turismo variants to the record-setting Turbo GT, Car and Driver editors named the Taycan their top pick. It scored highest "in the Technology category with the optional Active Ride Suspension, Mission Fulfillment category by offering the definitive EV sports sedan, and in the Fun to Drive category," noted Porsche, highlighting its outstanding performance across key benchmarks.
"The Porsche Taycan needs little introduction,” states Car & Driver. The publication took the rear-wheel drive Taycan sedan for a spin, Porsche's electric masterpiece capable of launching from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds with Launch Control, delivering up to 402 horsepower and reaching a top speed of 143 mph. After countless near-silent laps around the evaluation loop, Car and Driver declared that "the Porsche Taycan emerged with a crown on its hood."

Thus, it's no doubt why the Taycan took home the 2025 EV of the Year. This electrical innovation arrives with major upgrades, including a new rear-axle motor that delivers up to 80 kW more power, lighter weight, and improved all-wheel-drive and recuperation strategies. Paired with upgraded batteries, it now offers over 35% more range than its predecessor—making it more powerful, efficient, and dynamic than ever.
The 82.3 kWh Performance Battery allows the Porsche Taycan to charge from 0 to 100% in approximately 11.5 hours using AC power at 9.6 kW and has an EPA Estimated Range of 274 miles. The 97.0 kWh Performance Battery Plus extends the full charge time to about 13.0 hours under the same conditions and offers an EPA Estimated Range of 318 miles. Thus, "No matter the trim, there's no shortage of power," adds Car and Driver.

Car and Driver didn’t hold back when recounting their thrilling experience behind the wheel of the Taycan Turbo GT: "Also in the logbook: a recommendation to have your head planted firmly against the headrest before engaging the Turbo GT's launch control. If you ate a hearty meal beforehand, beware: Launch control may lead to issues with lunch control. Still, you have to try it at least once. Your inner ear will have absolutely no idea what the hell is happening, and your brain won't catch up to reality until you're well into triple digits. It's great." Perhaps the best way to describe the power of the Taycan.
The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is a performance powerhouse, rocketing from 0–60 mph in just 2.2 seconds with Launch Control and reaching a top speed of 180 mph. With 1,019 horsepower and ultra-fast DC charging from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, it’s built for speed—on the road and at the plug.
"Porsche's job is to build sports cars, and the Taycan lives up to the performance expectations—and then some. Of the new or recently refreshed EVs to hit the market within the past year, the Porsche Taycan is the one we cherish most," - Car and Driver.
