What are the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICKs?

The IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK awards are given each year by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one of the most trusted independent safety organizations in the automotive industry. These awards highlight the vehicles that provide the highest levels of protection in crashes and offer strong, effective safety technology to help prevent accidents in the first place.

To earn a TOP SAFETY PICK or the higher TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, a vehicle must perform well in a series of rigorous evaluations. These include crash tests that measure how well the vehicle protects occupants in different types of impacts, as well as tests that assess headlights, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection systems. In recent years, IIHS has also updated its criteria to focus on improved side-impact protection and nighttime safety performance, making the awards more challenging and more meaningful, than ever.
