From the start, Verstappen took the lead at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, while Fernando Alonso overtook Sergio Perez for second position at Turn 1, though he soon relinquished it and gradually fell back. Mid-race drama unfolded when Valtteri Bottas exited the race due to a mechanical issue, prompting a Safety Car that led to a frenzy of pit stops. This shuffle slightly altered the race dynamics, but Verstappen kept his cool and held on to his position at the front, despite the chaos ensuing behind him upon the restart, where multiple incidents occurred among the drivers.

McLaren F1

At the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri demonstrated strong performances right from the start, maintaining P4 and P5 respectively as the race began. Norris, with his tires in excellent condition, overtook Fernando Alonso for P3, while Piastri, struggling with rear tire degradation, was overtaken by Charles Leclerc, falling to P6. As the field pitted, Norris took a brief lead at the front. Piastri pitted for Medium tires, rejoining in P9. Following Valtteri Bottas’ retirement and a Virtual Safety Car, Norris switched to Hard tires on Lap 23. A subsequent full Safety Car allowed Piastri to also switch to Hards. The race resumed with Norris in P2 and Piastri in P8. Despite a restart due to incidents and another Safety Car, Norris held his second place, and Piastri, despite contact and car damage from Daniel Ricciardo, managed to finish in P8, securing points for the team.

Ferrari F1

At the Chinese Grand Prix, Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz experienced an eventful race, marked by strategic maneuvers and competitive driving. Starting on new Medium tires, both drivers initially lost positions to George Russell and Nico Hulkenberg. However, Leclerc quickly recovered to seventh, and Sainz also advanced to eighth by the end of the opening lap. Later, Leclerc moved up to fourth after overtaking Oscar Piastri and benefiting from Fernando Alonso’s pit stop, while Sainz reached sixth. Mid-race, after pit stops shuffled positions, Leclerc climbed to second, and Sainz to fourth. Sainz faced a setback with a fast pit stop that initially dropped him to tenth, but he soon recovered to ninth. After a Virtual Safety Car caused by Valtteri Bottas stopping on track, Leclerc pitted and rejoined in fourth, and when Sergio Perez and Alonso pitted under a later Safety Car, Leclerc was third, and Sainz moved to fifth. Despite another shake-up at a restart and various position changes, Leclerc finished the race in fourth, just ahead of Sainz in fifth. Throughout the weekend, Ferrari amassed a total of 31 points, consolidating a strong performance in both the race and the sprint sessions.

Aston Martin kicked off their 2024 Chinese Grand Prix debut with Fernando Alonso starting at third position on the grid, impressively moving up to second place right at the first corner. Despite needing repairs to his car’s floor before the race, Alonso managed a competitive performance, navigating through various tire strategies. He started on Medium tires and made a total of three pit stops, switching to Hard tires and then to Softs during a Safety Car period. Alonso maintained the Softs for a significant 20-lap stint before finishing the race on Mediums, which helped him recover positions and finish in seventh place. His remarkable efforts also earned him the fastest lap of the race with a time of 1:37.810, adding an extra point to his tally for the weekend.
