The VW Golf R was already a legend.
But now VW is celebrating two decades of the Golf R with a 20 Years Edition 2023 VW Golf R.
This very special Golf is currently in the midst of launching and will be available for about one year.
It’s an ultra-powerful hatch that puts out 328-hp thanks to its 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. That’s a boost from 315-hp in the regular model.
That’s a boost of 13 horses from the regular 315-hp model.
And, most exciting of all is the fact that it’s the most powerful Golf that VW has ever created.
Let’s take a look at some of the features that make the 2023 VW Golf R even more extra:
Other special features: An “emotion start” option that, when activated, allows the special edition car to rev to 2,500 rpm on startup, giving it a more aggressive sound.
It also comes R-Performance equipment as standard, rather than optional as it is on the standard Golf R.
The R-Performance includes a rear spoiler on the roof and R-Performance Torque Vectoring plus added driving modes with what VW calls “Special” and “Drift” settings.
Additionally, the 20-Year Special Edition Golf R has R logos on the grille, fenders, and hatchback; Mirror caps that are blue unless customers orders blue paint, in which case the mirror caps are black; A “20” badge is on the B-pillar; Nineteen-inch wheels with a two-tone black and blue color scheme (or you can request all black).
Inside, there’s luxurious Nappa leather plus sport seats and an “R” logo adorning the upper section of the backrest. Carbon fiber trim makes the dashboard and interior door panels pop.
To date, Volkswagen has sold more than 260,000 R models all over the world.

Keep in mind that it’s part of automotive history. Although the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R is an all-new model it’s part of the eighth generation of the Golf lineup. That makes it an ultra-hot hatch that is sure to be a favorite with collectors in the long run. You get sports car fun at an affordable price. It delivers plenty of performance and a spirited heart-racing drive. You can choose between manual or automatic transmission. And the regular Golf R is relatively affordable.
It’s a premium performance yet practical hatchback that starts at $44,090. And it’s perfect for sport enthusiasts thanks to what Car & Driver calls its “capable chassis and suspension system and the brilliant turbocharged inline-4 motor that has the potential to outshine many of the rivals.”
You’ll love the R’s 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-4 engine that churns out 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The 6-speed manual is standard and you have the option of a super-fun 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. All of the power comes through a full-time AWD drivetrain system.
