Audi is taking the lead in the automotive world as the the fastest all-electric luxury car maker.
The company plans to complete the task as the fastest all-electric luxury car maker within the next five years.
Audi has in fact announced it will end the development of any new internal combustion engine models by the end of 2026 in order to focus solely on fully electric vehicles.
After 2026, Audi plans on being an all-electric car maker and will only develop battery-powered models .
But don’t worry if an Audi EV isn’t your thing. Although Audi plans to stop production of new gasoline, diesel, and hybrid cars, its new models launched by 2026 will continue to be built and sold until the early 2030s.
After that time, Audi will become an all-electric luxury car maker.
Take, for instance, the A3 and A4 as examples. They will not have combustion-engine successors but will be replaced by the battery-powered A3 e-tron and A4 e-tron.
The electrification of Audi’s A5 and A6 models will then follow suit.
The Q8 will likely be the last internal combustion engine model built by Audi and will launch in 2026 alongside an electric version called the Q8 e-tron.
The internal combustion engine Q8 will then be produced until 2032, German media has reported, citing sources at Audi.
By 2025, you can expect to see 20 all-electric Audi models globally.
Audi’s current full-electric cars are: the e-tron, e-tron Sportback and e-tron GT.

The e-tron and e-tron Sportback are based on Audi’s MLB Evo platform and the e-tron GT shares its J1 platform with the Porsche Taycan.
Audi’s transition to fully electric is currently going faster and further than its rivals at a time when automakers in general are starting to get serious about converting to fully electric models.
Many have announced plans to get rid of gasoline- and diesel-powered cars in the coming years as they aim for becoming carbon neutral in order to meet tight emissions regulations.
Audi is leading the pack in the all-electric automotive world.
BMW and Mercedes-Benz also plan to switch to electric but are proceeding more cautiously. Mercedes has given no exact timeline and BMW says it expects half of its sales to be fully-electric models by the year 2030.
Bentley, meanwhile, has announced plans to drop internal combustion engines from its cars by 2030 as it makes the switch to full-electric vehicles for its entire range.
Audi board chairman Markus Duesmann told company executives and labor leaders that the company “will stop introducing cars based on petrol and diesel engines from 2026,” including hybrid models, and take the automotive world by storm as an all-electric luxury car maker.
Audi’s parent company Volkswagen has been aggressively pursuing electrification as a goal in general.
But for now, Audi sells more electric cars than any other company within the VW umbrella.
The changes are in direct reaction to countries and cities banning the sale of new vehicles with internal combustion engines and tightening all emissions regulations.
So by 2026, you can expect to see the release of only those Audis that are purely electric. Making Audi the fastest all-electric luxury car maker.
Not ready to go fully electric by then? Don’t fret. Audi will continue to manufacture vehicles with internal combustion engines until the year 2033.
After that gasoline- and diesel-powered Audi vehicles will be phased out of production. Audi aims to become carbon neutral by 2050.
In order to reach that goal, the automaker will have to make dramatic changes and make them quickly.
It’s the future of cars in general, however, and Audi is demonstrating how it’s done.
So what is the most highly rated Audi EV?
According to Car & Driver, the top contenders are the Audi e-tron and the e-tron Sportback. They feature a streamlined and tranquil interior and potent electric motors provide all-wheel drive and near-instant acceleration, according to the magazine. Moreover, the 2022 e-tron and e-tron Sportback have a decent range and fast-charging times at charging stations.
