With just 99 models available worldwide, the 2023 BMW M850i Gran Coupe “8 x Jeff Koons” edition carries a colorful exterior paint created by the famous artist that suggests comic-book themes.

Starting at $350,995, each car’s paint job took a reported 285 hours to complete.

Famed surrealist Koons used the Gran Coupe as his canvas, making it the second time he’s created an “Art Car.” A special exterior for a BMW limited edition car.

Car & Driver called the new model a “rolling piece of art” sure to be a favorite of comic book enthusiasts.

Known as the “8 x Jeff Koons” car, it’s more of a collectible car – or collectible work of art – rather than something you’d run errands in or put through the rigors of a rowdy road trip.

But it’s still a BMW. It carries a 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as the German automaker’s available xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

BMW reported that the Koons art car is among the company’s “most extensive custom factory production processes ever.” And it’s so laborious that just two of the automobiles will be produced per week.

All buyers of the new Koons “Art Car” edition receive a unique VIN number and a certificate of authenticity that was signed by the artist himself as well as BMW CEO Oliver Zipse.

So it really is a world-class work of art. The vibrant hues carry over to the interior, where bright red and blue seats are a nod to the M performance division as well as your favorite movie and comic book superheroes.

The retractable cover at the front of the main console carries a badge reading “The 8 x Jeff Koons” as well as Koons’ signature. In 2010, BMW and Koons worked together to create a previous art car: The Koons Edition E92 M3, which even raced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The new Jeff Koons BMW M850i “Art Car” probably won’t race but it has been displayed at Rockefeller Plaza in New York.

Koons is known for his absurdist sculptures that seem to depict balloon figures of people and animals as well as floral sculptures that look like giant topiaries.

“My edition of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a dream come true. It is completely unique, very special to me and I’ve wanted to create a special edition BMW for a long time,” Koons said via BMW. “What matters is how we relate to each other and our awareness of everything we are surrounded by. This principle drove my creative vision for The 8 X.”

Roomy and comfortable, the BMW 8 gives you limousine luxury and BMW sportiness in one car. It comes in both a hardtop coupe as well as a ragtop convertible option.

The 8 series is a grand cruiser with all of the tech, luxury, style, and performance you would expect of a BMW. This fun-to-drive cruiser also has standard features like SiriusXM and a plethora of safety features, including a lane-departure warning.

Car & Driver points out that the M850i’s delightfully powerful twin-turbo is a joy to drive with the added benefit of optional features such as a neck warmer, driver assistance features, and an optional crystal shift knob and buttons.

The M850i is BMW’s largest coupe and convertible, carrying a turbo-charged six-cylinder engine that generates 335 horsepower. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission as well as rear- or all-wheel drive. You can get from zero to 60 in a mere 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.

The 8-series gives you a supremely quiet ride combined with BMW athleticism.

So whether you opt for an 8 with or without exterior art, the 8-series is far from standard.
