The Ferrari Monza SP1 is one of the Most Incredible Supercars Money Can Buy – Nearly Two Million to Be Exact

The Ferrari Monza SP1 is already an icon in more ways than one. In fact, it’s a showcase of the Italian automaker’s ‘Icona’ (Icon) concept

The SP1 is a single-seater (while the nearly identical SP2 has two seats), with the driver’s position situated to one side of the car.

With an eye to the future, the SP1’s technologically advanced components bring the highest performance possible thanks to continuous innovation. Only 499 will be built for some very special collectors – and they are already sold out.

So let’s take a look at some of the incredible features that make the Ferrari Monza SP1 one of the greatest supercars of the past decades and why it sold out so quickly.

The Engine

The SP1’s stunning bodywork is inspired by the 750 Monza and 860 Monza racing cars of the mid-1950s, referenced in the voluptuous front wing curves, those abrupt rear buttresses, and unusual seating. The 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine is front-mid-mounted and similar to that found in the Ferrari 812 Superfast but with 10 additional horsepower bringing the total to 801 horsepower and 530lb-ft of torque. It’s a historical car – with a historical engine – that exists solely for you, the driver.  The SP1 comes with only one type of transmission, an F1 seven-speed dual-clutch system. With a curb weight of just under 3,310 lbs, you can get from zero to 60 in just 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph.

It’s a Work of Art

It’s been called a car whose pure beauty looks “sculpted by the wind” and its styling elements are truly impressive. The aesthetic is futuristic but at the same time a respectful yet un-nostalgic homage to the past. Even the Monza SP1’s LED light units are a work of art – expressed as a slender light bar instead of quad round lenses at the rear. The turbine-spoke wheels are a fresh take that is not found on any other Ferrari model. Inside and out, Ferrari engineers succeeded beautifully in using a modern aesthetic to reinterpret a timeless style, all while including high-tech components and the highest performance possible

The Virtual Windshield

The Ferrari Monza SP1 has no windows or roof – and it also has no windshield. Instead, it has what the Italian automaker calls a “virtual windshield.” Instead of a glass windshield or screen, Ferrari has developed an airflow system designed to carry out the same function of a windshield. As the car moves, air is sucked in through the intake at the front of the car, then channeled to an upwards-facing vent that’s located in front of the driver’s seat, creating the windshield-like barrier.

It Only Has One Seat

This is one of the most unique features on the SP1. Ferrari gave the car a single seat made of carbon fiber to keep weight at a minimum. To get into the car the driver lifts up a small door and hops over a sill before lowering himself/herself into the driver’s seat. Once inside you are ready for incredible driving thrills as you bask in the gorgeous leather upholstery. But don’t plan on bringing a friend! For that, you will need to invest in the two-seater SP2, which is almost identical. The idea to make an extreme car with a single seat is rooted deeply in Ferrari’s history. The Barchetta design is the basis for many of the automaker’s racing cars from the ’50s, which look similar to the design of the Monza SP1. And that is exactly what the Ferrari designers had in mind.

The Interior is a Classic

The interior of the SP1 is based Upon the 812. Lovers of all things Ferrari will recognize it as being similar to the classic 812. In fact, it employs the same chassis as the stock 812 as well as an identical engine. You may also spot many similar mechanical components and the overall interior look is similar.

Starting price: of $1.8 million.
